Snow and ice? No, thanks! Mary Thrall heads south

When a class member makes a home move that involves a fairly radical geographical change (see Ruth Ryan note, above), we want to hear the details! So we asked for the backstory after receiving a note from Mary about an address change from New York to the Low country of South Carolina. Here’s what she said: “When my boyfriend and I decided to escape the cold winters on Long Island, we knew we had two decisions to make. First, where to go and, second, whether to go year round or be ‘snowbirds’. George suggested Florida and I said absolutely not. I wanted at least a hint of seasons. Friends who had moved to SC a few years ago kept urging us to visit. So last year we went, we saw and we bought. We wavered on the second question but wound up deciding to make a full time move in December instead of trying to manage two homes.

We live in Sun City Hilton Head, which is actually in Bluffton near Hilton Head Island. I never expected to live in a place called Sun City but it ‘s a large and active 55+ community with a tremendous assortment of clubs and activities.” (Rich and Bobbi Thayer Kirtland are having the same experience in the Villages, Florida.) Mary already had some experience with southern accents and a slower pace. And as she put it, “People here are very nice and we wonder if they were always nice or if they became nice after moving here! It's also a bit like the Wild West in some ways -- think guns, fireworks and not many streetlights -- but it's great for this stage of our lives. I would love to hear from anyone living in the area or passing through.”  Mary’s email address is maryt33@yahoo.com.
