Popcorn heaven

Even though he is much too modest to say so himself, Tom Bloomer is having success in the artisanal popcorn business with his Bur Oaks Farm Red, an old-fashioned variety that is not commonly grown. It has red kernels that turn snow white when popped. (He also makes an excellent White popcorn.) The non-GMO popcorn is grown without insecticides, and every stage from planting to processing in small batches takes place on Tom’s farm in north Ann Arbor. Class members who have become fans include Diane Stump Williams, Francie King, Cindy Burke Elder, David Slee, Nsncy Evaldson Mirshah, Bonnie Holzhauer Bean, Barb Kendall Souza, Bill Kirchen, Sharon Ralph Gingras, Patricia Schneider Mannor, Patricia Arnold Carney, Colleen McLean Calver, Martha Walters Sayre, Duane Brown and Nancy McArtor. Several have bought some as Christmas presents. Duane took it to a whole new level recently after buying 20 pounds. He and an unnamed class member had Bur Oaks Farm Red for dinner one night. Appetizer, main course, and dessert: popcorn cooked in bacon fat! Served in great style, of course. Popcorn with a martini? Why not!
