Old friendships can be the best ones

In 2007, a group of “Ann Arbor girls”, some of whom are friends going back as far as elementary school at Angell School and Burns Park School, and others who met at Tappan Junior High School, decided to get together to celebrate their 60th birthdays.

Janie Allen Angwin’s home in Palm Desert, CA, was home base that year, the first of a continuing series of reunions in interesting places, including Hilton Head, South Haven, and Burt Lake, with the most recent in September at Francie Smillie’s home in northern Michigan.

The group numbers 13 and the friends who were able to come this year were Janie Allen Angwin, Sally Fawcett Peet, Bobbie Goddard Lam, Mary Jane Lyndon, Carol Martin, Ann Ratliff Bernard, Nancy Schweitzer Potter, Francie Smillie and Pam Ufer Wood. (Four others—Buffy Baker, Nancy McArtor, Martha Payne Harris, and Lynn Umpleby Fuentes—missed this year’s gathering.)

The get-togethers always include some serious conversations about all the changes the passing years bring, but mostly it’s rollicking fun. As Carol said, “We played games, walked, played Pickleball, missed our cruise (don’t ask!), cooked, ate and laughed for three days straight.”

The next reunion is already on the calendar for September 2024, again in Harbor Springs, and maybe they won't miss the boat this time!
