Those of us who enjoyed seeing Nick at the 50-year reunion were shocked and saddened to get the news that he died in April.
Susan Magid Bergin spoke for many of us when she wrote, “Oh no!! What a genuinely sweet, worthy man. Too soon!!” There were many similar comments in the Facebook group after Duane Brown posted a statement from Nick’s daughter, Ann. Here’s what she wrote: “I'm so sorry to share that we lost my dad, Nick van der Schalie, yesterday. He and my mom had come up to Irvine to spend the day with their grandkids who were on spring break. We were just sitting down to dinner in a restaurant when he collapsed. He died of cardiac arrest, and we suspect he may have had a stroke or blood clot that brought it on. There is much to be grateful for: a life filled with family and friends who loved him and were blessed by him, a good last day with some of his family around him, a relatively quick death, and that my mom wasn't alone with him when this happened. But it's also a traumatic and sudden loss for us, so prayers are of course appreciated. It was particularly hard to witness his collapse and death.” A service for Nick was held on April 22 in North County San Diego. His daughter said they did not do an obituary.
