8/11/23. John is recalled by classmates as a terrific gymnast and he was a member of the AAHS team that became State Champions. Post-graduation, he had a fascinating career, starting with the Marine Corps in 1965. A recipient of the Purple Heart award from service in Vietnam, he was aboard the U.S.S. Hornet and part of the recovery team for the Apollo 11 astronauts. Back in the U.S., he worked for the utilities department of Scio Township for 27 years and was a volunteer firefighter along with our classmate, John Cooch. Here's a picture from John C. showing them on duty. In the shot, Walton is the firefighter and Cooch is the helicopter pilot.
As John’s obituary notes, he “loved everything U.P.” and after retirement moved to the Upper Peninsula, living in Sault Ste. Marie and later Munising.
