5/24/2020. On the morning of May 12, Brent’s partner wrote to Duane Brown to let him know that Brent had died. Joe said, “His sister and I held him close as he peacefully drew his last breaths at the hospital” after a long illness.
Duane shared the news with our class Facebook community, and a comment by Laurie McFall Leinbach on Brent’s sweet nature was echoed by others using almost the same words. Colleen McLean Calver reminisced about a Class of ’65 regional reunion in 2015 in Austin where Brent lived. That was the first chance for some of us to meet him in person.
Brent was a Texas native and it was his father’s career as a Ford Motor Co. executive that brought him to Michigan. He majored in German and comparative literature at SMU, continuing in graduate school at the University of Texas, and became a gifted and highly respected German scholar, teacher and translator. Brent was, as Susan Magid Bergin noted, “a true gentleman” and he will be missed.
