Remembering Faculty member Dick Massman

Martha Pott got in touch to ask if we had any information about Dick Massman, the orchestra teacher at Burns Park, Tappan and later at AAHS. Bob Hallock did some research and found a former college student of Mr. Massman’s for Martha talk to. Mr. Massman earned his PhD in 1972 from the UofM, and had a great teaching career at the University of Minnesota. If you knew him, you won’t be surprised to hear that his former student said, “All his students thought very highly of him, and he 'bumped up the [musical] community considerably.” Martha commented, “That one statement is consistent with our memory of him as someone who inspired us to do better, practice more, achieve more and, most of all, appreciate music.“ He was only 67 when he died in 1997.
