This year, Michael Bartus made a move from Michigan to the Pacific Northwest and dealt with one of those tasks you have to face sooner or later: sorting years of papers that you don’t want to drag with you to your new place. It’s a pain, but often there are little gems that come to light and beg to be shared. One thing he dug out was a program from an evening of performances by the Instrumental Music Dept. at Tappan Jr. High on February 16, 1961. Many of the young musicians who played that night as 8th graders are names you’ll recognize from the Class of ’65. Janine Halford and Joan Campbell performed a flute duet by Mozart; Kathy Kimball soloed on piano; Chris Kyprie and Martha Pott did a cello duet by Handel; and Nick Vanderschalie, Sally Larcom, Carol Keeton, and Michael Allen played works with young musicians from other classes. Both Ted Fosdick and Bob Hallock played cornet solos; violinists Muriel Kaplan, Sara Stubbins, and Ned Farrar all performed solos as well as playing in other combos; and Rick Rector played in a quintet on an instrument that’s not commonly found in middle school orchestras, the bassoon.
