Making modern art in a medieval village

Updated: Jul 6, 2022

We have 8 class members living abroad, including one classmate each in France and England, and two each in the Netherlands, Canada, and Germany. One of these is Wolfgang Tonne, who lives in the medieval city of Lübeck, near Hamburg. His host family in Ann Arbor is gone now, but he still enjoys following class member news. He has a large family of his own—including 18 grandchildren!—and the picture shows Wolfgang and his wife, Amrie, with them all.

While Wolfgang thinks of himself primarily as a professor of architecture, he has also created a large body of work spanning painting, sculpture, design and architecture in both private and public spaces. He's had a number of traveling exhibitions, including stops near Ann Arbor.

His goal throughout his career has been to “make art with a meaning, to touch and encourage people’s hearts beyond aesthetics. I believe in the calling of art of all times to enrich our lives and environments with beauty, meaning and eternal values showing in all suffering, ugliness, wounds, hopes and joy of life that we experience.” You can see many examples of Wolfgang’s work on his website.
