Doug Olsen — the news we are always sorry to share

Pamela Conn Hyde received a startling email from Doug's daughter Kristen on the afternoon of July 14: "For those of you who weren't aware, my dad was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer back in February. Today we found out that he only has hours to days left." She emailed again the next morning, "My dad went to his heavenly home last night at about 11 p.m." We don't often get that kind of immediacy when learning of a class member's passing and it made the news feel especially poignant. Doug often acknowledged the class emails with a warm note, and usually let me know if he would be attending a particular reunion. He was a pastor and it was easy to see that he had a gift for connection with people. You can read his obituary here.
