Bill Kirchen: Home for the holidays and bringing good cheer with him

The last stop on Bill Kirchen’s annual holiday tour is Austin, where he lives, so he can spend Christmas at home with his family. When Colleen McLean Calver, down from Dallas, is in town to visit her sons and grandchildren, she and her husband, Lew go to hear Bill play on Christmas Eve. The show is held at the Armadillo Christmas Bazaar, a juried show, where Bill and his band have been a fixture for years, performing the final show on the 24th. He has a loyal following in Austin and Colleen and her family have attended four times in the past five years. Colleen wrote, “The band’s first set is devoted to Christmas music and Bill invites all the children up on the stage to sing ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘Rudolph, the Red-nosed Reindeer’. Our girls love it and Bill’s two granddaughters are up there, too. The second set is composed of more traditional ‘Bill’ songs, country and Dieselbilly.” And for all you other fans of Bill’s music, that means “Hot Rod Lincoln”, of course. Once you’ve heard that, you’re glad for any excuse to hear it again, at Christmas or any other time of the year.
