A family tradition opens the New Year

Sylvia Shippey started out 2020 with an outing to Dobbins Point on South Mountain, overlooking Phoenix from 2300 feet.  Her daughters, Jennifer and Rebecca Young, were there from Michigan for their yearly Christmas visit. Dobbins Point is a local landmark and Sylvia joked about being there on New Year's Day when "every out of town visitor had the same idea." The mountain has a beautiful view of Phoenix, where Sylvia has lived for 11 years. She came to Arizona to be with her widowed mother (who has now passed on) and for jobs, after Michigan was one of the worst hit areas in the Great Recession. Like some two dozen other class members who live in the Southwest, one of the many things she loves about it is a climate that lets you wear a cotton sweater outdoors in January. As she puts it, "This is my idea of winter."
