When Bonnie Holzhauer Bean posted a few photos on Facebook and talked about a Thanksgiving croquet game, we had to find out more. She said it got started at the suggestion of a close friend, Marianne, and wrote, “I had an old croquet set in the back shed. We dug it out, set it up, and thus began our annual Thanksgiving Day tradition. No need to be an athlete, or have any special skills.” We probably all played it as kids and just whacked that wooden ball through a trail of wickets, the crazier the better. Some of the distractions at Bonnie’s: "a plaster rooster near a particular wicket that always seems to jump out (not) and divert your ball; tall weeds; and once a black snake kept slithering through the course.” [This is in Florida, by the way.] Bonnie said, “My mom was famous for her game-winning strategy and there is always plenty of laughter, silliness and healthy competition. For a few years we had a beat up old trophy that was awarded to the winner. I think I accidentally sold it one year in a garage sale. Some folks who were a part of this fun tradition have left this earth. I always think of them when we play.” Playing this year at Bonnie’s were David Slee and friends Marianne and Elliott. David Menefee also joined them for Thanksgiving dinner.
